How do I get a quote for my scrap car?

Accepted Answer

Fill in the quote form with your registration, make, model and postcode, or call 0330 123 0112. Most quotes are confirmed the same working day. The more you tell us up front, whether it starts, whether the catalytic converter and battery are still fitted, whether it has been standing for years, the more certain the figure is. The price we agree is the price you are paid on the same day as collection.

How much is my scrap car worth?

Accepted Answer

Value depends on weight, age, condition, whether the engine runs, and current scrap metal prices. A small three-door hatchback weighs around a tonne and sits at the lower end. Estates, 4x4s, panel vans and light commercials carry far more metal and pay accordingly. On top of the weight we look at whether anything on the vehicle has resale life left in it, which is why two cars of the same size can be quoted differently.

Do you pay cash for scrap cars?

Accepted Answer

No. Cash payments for scrap vehicles are illegal in the UK under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, which was written specifically to make stolen vehicles and metal harder to move. We pay by bank transfer on the same day as collection. Any yard still offering you notes at the kerb is telling you something about how it runs everything else.

Is collection really free?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Free collection is included across our coverage area, including the Central Belt, Fife, Tayside, the Lothians, Ayrshire, the Borders and the North East. It applies to runners and non-runners alike, and nothing is deducted from the quote for the distance or the winch.

Can you collect a car that does not start?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Our transporters are winch equipped, so non-runners, MOT failures, accident damage and insurance write-offs are all collected as standard. Flat batteries, seized engines, missing wheels and cars that have not moved in years are routine work, and there is no extra charge for any of it.

What documents do I need?

Accepted Answer

Ideally the V5C logbook and photo ID showing your name and address matching the payment account. A driving licence is easiest; a passport plus a recent utility bill also works. ID is mandatory under scrap metal legislation even when the logbook is missing, so have something ready for the driver.

What is a Certificate of Destruction?

Accepted Answer

A CoD is issued by an Authorised Treatment Facility and confirms the vehicle has been permanently destroyed. It ends your liability for tax, insurance and any future fines linked to the vehicle, and it means the car can never legally return to the road. Keep it: it is the document that proves the vehicle was gone before anything else happened to it.

Question 8

Do I get a road tax refund?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Once the DVLA is notified, any full remaining months of vehicle tax are refunded automatically to the registered keeper, normally by cheque within a few weeks. Part months are not refunded, so scrapping just after a monthly payment date costs you a little. Cancel any tax direct debit yourself as well.
